How does waste disposal work?
Switzerland
The correct disposal of domestic waste is the responsibility of all flatmates.
Follow these points to dispose your waste correctly:
- In most Swiss cities/municipalities, household waste must be disposed of in taxed garbage bags. These bags can usually be purchased at supermarket counters. (In most cases, you will have to ask the cashier for these garbage bags which are subject to a fee, as they are most often not on the shelves).
- The taxed garbage bags are to be placed in front of the house in accordance with the city/municipality's collection plan at the earliest on the evening before the collection. If garbage containers are available in your property or underfloor containers in your neighborhood, taxed garbage bags can be disposed in these at any time.
- Aluminum, glass, and PET (and sometimes other plastics) are recyclable materials and do not belong in household waste. In your neighborhood, you will find special recycling stations to dispose of these recyclables free of charge. PET and plastics can usually be disposed of free of charge in supermarkets.
- Newspapers and cardboard are to be collected and placed in front of the building on the day of the collection according to the collection plan of the city/municipality.
If you have further questions about waste separation or waste disposal, it is best to ask your roommates for help.
